Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. Her aunt Denise inspired her love of artistic expression and creative thinking. Her aunt worked the night shift as a nurse, so she could follow her passion for theater and art in the daytime. The aunt introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay recognized that art is an effective way to spread social activism. Her mother was also a social consciousness and taught DuVernay how to convey messages by means of art. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and was raised. Her father was awed by the historic Civil Rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there would later inspire her to write a script for a film based on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled in the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English and African American study. DuVernay started producing for broadcast journalism while she was still at university. DuVernay began her career as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to observe the house of one of the members of the jury as well as look through their trash. Her tasks left her disappointed in journalism, so she decided to shift her focus towards the publicity industry. DuVernay started her first job as a publicist in a small production studio right out of school. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999.
